A SINGLE MAN - now singularly lonely

Tom Ford’s -’A Single Man’, with Colin Firth, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Goode & Julianne Moore, was seen at Cineworld, in the Haymarket, London 12/2/10

In his early forties, George Falconer( Colin) in bed, is imagining the crash site at which his partner Jim( Matthew) has been killed and he’s lying in the snow. Now, immaculately dressed, he breakfasts but dreams again of Jim and receives an informational phone call from Jim’s relatives but he has not been invited to the funeral - we’re in Los Angeles in late 1962.

He’s rung by Charley( Julianna) who invites him for supper and he handles a pistol which he puts into his briefcase. Driving to work in his smart Mercedes he passes the neighbour’s kids but says nothing, everything is very slow and he listens to the radio, which talks of the aftermath of the Cuban missile crisis. He’s very English, is a Professor in that subject at the University - and taking a class he asks a few questions about the book by Aldous Huxley they’re supposed to have read but the good looking but slightly effeminate student Kenny Potter( Nicholas) tackles him in the class and they speak again afterwards.

Meeting Kenny perhaps augurs a new beginning

‘A Single Man’, 2009, US, Super35 a/r 2.35, 101mins, written by Tom, Christopher Isherwood & David Scearce, was produced by Tom Ford, Andrew Miano, Robert Salerno & Chris Weitz with Edward Grau as DoP - so George has done well in his life but is suicidal and meeting Kenny perhaps augurs a new beginning - so the story is a bit thin but the acting and the filming perfectly cover this aspect - but the richness of the night time photography( LLoyd Campbell and BeBee Inc) adds greatly to this movie.

A debut for the director( who also is an executive producer) with a budget at a perceived level of around $10million, this film - grossing worldwide about $6.5million with still some ground to cover - is being distributed in the UK by Icon.

My Gran, who’s always saying she can spot a good flick coming at the range of 84,480 frames, added that this is one of those and that it has therefore acquired many awards and nominations in the US. She adds that, with this film, Colin Firth has confirmed his place in the ranks of the ‘A’ List and will likely win Best Actor in March at that place in California. She also finished, ”which, in driving, is also within the showing ‘time’ of 84,480 frames of where this flick was made”. Try getting your brain round that!
